Practical guidance for small farms and gardens across Tasmania.
Each place is its own. There is no single way that can be carried from one farm or garden to another without change.
What works in one place may not hold together in another. Soil, climate, history, and the people working the land all shape what is possible. Times like these call for clear thought and experience. And I’d be happy to help with that.
What I Can Help With
My Approach
When I came home from 3 years of agricultural school, I had many ideas about how to re-shape our family farm. My father respectfully listened to all of them, and denied all but one. Over the next twenty years we retained organic matter from cropping and pastures, at a time when the widespread practice was to burn it. Our soils began to show remarkable changes we could not have foreseen, and did not expect.
In 2009 we stopped using chemicals and unnatural fertilisers. Natural farming and gardening require thought and patience, but over time the rewards undo any doubts.
Alongside family farming, I have spent nearly twenty years working in the natural resource industry. The observations, stories and lessons learnt from nature has helped shape the practices, techniques and solutions I now use in farming and land management. The aim is to respectfully use nature as part of the farm or garden to achieve our goals.
