Description
Sheoke – Allocasuarina verticillata.
Sheokes are small to medium sized trees with long drooping ‘leaves’* that are cylindrical in shape giving the tree an appearance, if you use your imagination. This may be the reason the species is called a She Oak.
Sheoke grow in a variety of soils, often shallow and or sandy, although in cultivation they grow well in heavier soil as well. One of the best trees for insectivorous – birds, bats and other insects, and a good nesting tree for birds.
Sheokes are very easy to establish and a great species to mix with others in windbreaks and screens due to the different growing style and ability to grown upwards as well as fill gaps. Tolerates coastal and windy conditions, drought and rock. Will even grow in fissures where most of the ground is rock. Grows some of the best firewood and timber for wood turning.
Package includes over 20 seeds in a recycled package, individually packed and selected. This product includes free postage.
We have been collecting native seed, growing and establishing native trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses since 1992, having personally planted and seeded more than a million native plants in over 500 projects. The shrubs selected are the best mix for the greatest variety of sites to establish habitat and improve properties across Tasmania and medium to high rainfall parts of southern Australia. Once established they are resistant to: short term drought, insect attack & tolerant of fire. They also offer your property protection against wind, heat, pest insect incursions (by building up native insect predators), a level of protection against bushfire by slowing the velocity of winds and seclusion from roads and neighbours.
