Winter Time On A Small Bruny Island Farm
Winter Has Arrived On Bruny Island Cold weather at last. It does not feel like…
In 2023 we moved to a property that no one wanted, with a house and grounds that were abandoned over 30 years before. The farm now has an evolving 1 acre garden growing vegetables and flowers with young fruit trees. The abandoned house is in stage 2 with the front half renovated. The Shepherds Hut Farmstay has had many happy guests, and the camp ground in the forest is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. We are slowly renovating the forest to evolve into a layered habitat and sustainable ecosystem. In spring 2025 we open our farm gate stall to offer produce, farmhouse treats and craft.
The farm is on South Bruny Island with the sounds of the ocean to the east, and small mountains to the west. The farm has level paddocks leading to the forest on the eastern boundary, with several winter streams running through. Because the farm was a dairy farm in the past, we have good soils to enable us to grow vegetables and flowers as a start, and orchards and pastures in the future.
